“We need, in every community, a group of angelic troublemakers”

— St. Bayard Rustin

Our Story

The Queer Saints Project began as a collaboration between the artist, Jason Tseng, and Judson Memorial Church, a historic church located in New York City’s West Village neighborhood. In 2018, Judson commissioned Tseng to create icons of LGBTQIA+ ancestors, to celebrate their inherent divinity, honor their contributions, and reclaim them as queer saints.

These icons were originally created for Pride Month to be used on protest signs carried in the Queer Liberation March. The first batch of saints were created using digital collage and photo manipulation, combining images of nature, Christian sacred iconography, and historical photography. Since then, subsequent Queer Saints have been fully illustrated using photographic references. Every year, more Queer Saints are “canonized” and added to the project. Every year, more Queer Saints join us in the streets, marching for Queer liberation at protests, memorials, and community celebrations.

Our goal is to raise awareness and funds for the LGBTQIA+ community using these transcendent images that glorify and celebrate the miracle that is queerness.

Blessed be their names.
